{"id":40,"date":"2019-05-28T19:49:28","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T19:49:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesecularcommunity.org\/blog\/?p=40"},"modified":"2019-05-29T00:41:43","modified_gmt":"2019-05-29T00:41:43","slug":"what-is-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesecularcommunity.org\/blog\/2019\/05\/28\/what-is-god\/","title":{"rendered":"What is God?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is our first in what we hope will be a long and meaningful\nstring of blog posts.&nbsp; For this first\nposting, we thought we would start a discussion on a particularly difficult\nquestion \u2013 what is God?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/thesecularcommunity.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/landscape_post1-700x466.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesecularcommunity.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/landscape_post1-700x466.jpg 700w, https:\/\/thesecularcommunity.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/landscape_post1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thesecularcommunity.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/landscape_post1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thesecularcommunity.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/landscape_post1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fundamental to a discussion of religion and its pros and\ncons is the question of defining God or gods.&nbsp;\nWhat we mean by any particular god is always problematic because a god\nis merely a concept, not something you can see or hear or touch.&nbsp; Therefore, the existence of such a being\ncannot be positively either proven or disproven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because a god cannot be seen or heard or touched, whether it\nexists or in what form it exists is open to a broad spectrum of interpretations.&nbsp; That\u2019s why religion, as a practice, is so\nproblematic.&nbsp; Religion is the human\ninterpretation of what is perceived to be the makeup and intent of the god or\ngods being worshiped.&nbsp; But why worship\nsomething that is completely intangible, whose existence depends totally on\nfaith, which ultimately requires the suspension of logic and reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The larger question is not whether God or gods exist, but\nwhat influence they have, if any, over our daily lives.&nbsp; To us, the answer is clear, being that except\nfor the forces of nature, we humans are in control of our own destiny and are the\nonly ones that are capable of influencing our lives, whether for good or for bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humanity is currently facing a real threat to its existence\nin the form of climate change, perhaps within decades.&nbsp; Climate change is a direct result of human\nactivity, largely from the burning of fossil fuels over the past few\ncenturies.&nbsp; It is clear to us that there\nis no god or other supernatural being that will intercede to save us.&nbsp; Only humanity itself, banding together, can\nhalt and reverse the effects of climate change. &nbsp;The question of God, then, becomes moot,\nbecause humanity must look to itself to save its future and the future of the\nmillions of species with whom we share the planet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is our first in what we hope will be a long and meaningful string of blog posts.&nbsp; For this first posting, we thought we would start a discussion on a particularly difficult question \u2013 what is God?
